Baseball Trip Wrap Up

June 21, 2011 - 8:06 pm

Our annual baseball trip has been over for a week, and I have been too lazy to update. We finished up our trip with two days in Detroit and three days in Toronto. Detroit was easily the worst place I have ever visited. I was naive to think that all of the horror stories I've heard about it were exaggerated, but I can confirm that they are indeed true. We stayed in the Westin renovated Book-Cadillac hotel and it was wonderful. The rest of downtown seemed incredibly deserted, with so many abandoned glorious skyscrapers in the process of decay, that I wasn't all that interested in seeing the city. Toronto on the other hand was wonderful. We stayed right on the harbor, which was in walking distance of just about everything. I hope to make it back there sometime.

I'm not familiar with this brand, and I'm not even sure if it's available in the United States, but I am in love with this commercial.

American Craft Beer Week

May 17, 2011 - 6:03 pm

Well, I'd be remiss in calling my website a beer related site if I failed to report Craft Beer Week this week (May 16-22), and even in that case, I'm guilty of reporting it a day late. The good news is that it's not too late to celebrate and BevMo wants to help you with that by offering specials on Craft Beers this week.

Crock Pot Beer Braised Pork and Black Beans

May 7, 2011 - 1:45 pm

The original recipe that I found refers to this as a soup, but if anything I'd call it a stew. Even then, the beans do a pretty good job of soaking up every last bit of liquid in the crock pot so I probably wouldn't call it a stew either. This is a recipe where you throw everything in the crock pot, go to work or shopping or for a massage, and come back to a hot meal in a few hours.

St Peters Cream Stout St Peters Brewery Co

April 16, 2011 - 1:46 pm

A few months back, we took a weekend trip to Palm Springs. Before checking into our magnificent hotel, we stopped at a wine shop that was supposed to have a sangiovese that we enjoy but is a bit difficult to find in stores. The shop didn't have the wine. They did have a small but thoughtful beer selection. I am under the impression that the owner takes great care in curating the beers they sell there, because there is only a limited selection and much of it is from small local breweries. The first beer we tried was the St. Peter's Cream Stout from St. Peter's Brewery Company, a drink only available at 2 stores in Los Angeles.

Bacon Flavored Beer

March 16, 2011 - 8:24 pm

I don't read every The Rundown everyday because Thrillist is much better. However, the subject line today caught my attention and the contents were a very pleasant surprise. Apparently there is a new Bar opening up downtown with an extension selection of artisan beers (as well as gourmet food). Surely this is not a new concept, but I think it deserves a trip anyways. Why? Here is an excerpt from the article: "The staff knows their brew and may rightly suggest an earthy Belgian Saison Dupont on tap or a bottle of Germany’s Aecht Schlenkerla Märzen, which smells and tastes, remarkably, like bacon." BevShots Beer Under a Microscope

March 5, 2011 - 11:03 am

I recently discovered a company called BevShots, and I am in awe of the beautiful prints they make from beer and other beverages photographed at the microscopic level. The results are stunning. Unfortunately I'm not a homeowner and I don't really have much wall space to hang art on, but they do also sell coasters and shot glasses featuring the same prints. I imagine at some point they'll extend their shot glass line to include beer glasses as well because it just makes sense.

Above: Black and Tan image. See all beer prints at BevShots.
