St Peters Cream Stout St Peters Brewery Co

A few months back, we took a weekend trip to Palm Springs. Before checking into our magnificent hotel, we stopped at a wine shop that was supposed to have a sangiovese that we enjoy but is a bit difficult to find in stores. The shop didn't have the wine. They did have a small but thoughtful beer selection. I am under the impression that the owner takes great care in curating the beers they sell there, because there is only a limited selection and much of it is from small local breweries. The first beer we tried was the St. Peter's Cream Stout from St. Peter's Brewery Company, a drink only available at 2 stores in Los Angeles.

There is no doubt a victory in finding this beer, although it's a bittersweet win considering there isn't really another local place where I can purchase it. The bottle is solid with good heft and a purple label. It's simple - most of the design is in the typography, although there is a small bird rendering which also appears on the bottle cap. Pouring it into a glass reveals its dark color and results in a small head.

St. Peter's website boasts the beer was the gold medal winner in the International Beer Competition in 2003 and 2004, the International Beer Challenge in 2006, and also one of the World's 50 Best Beers in 2006. I don't have a hard time seeing why. This is one of the smoothest, flavorful stouts I can remember having. I'd compare drinking this stout to drinking a chocolate bar; not only are the flavors reminiscent of each other, but I would only want to drink 1 and I'd want to sip and enjoy the taste of that beer. This isn't the type of beer I'd drink in a beer marathon, nor is it the type of beer that I'd want to eat with dinner. This is a beer I'd want to relax, sip, and enjoy and it's one I will be making a special stop to purchase the next time I am in Palm Springs.
