Breakthrough recycles brewery waste into fuel

February 21, 2011 - 10:00 pm

In a nutshell, the process extracts energy from the used grain so that it can be reused within the brewery in the beer making process. As long as I don't do anything stupid after a few beers, this is a step forward towards guilt free drinking.

Why Beer Batter is Better

February 9, 2011 - 7:45 pm

Scientific American makes a pretty compelling argument for why all batters should be beer batters. In summary:

  • The batter mix expands when the beer hits the hot oil, creating its signature texture.
  • The foam from the beer helps insulate the middle ingredients and heats them more gently than the outer batter layer.
  • Alcohol evaporates faster than water, so the item doesn't need to be cooked for as long as an non beer battered item.

Crock Pot Hirino Psito SlowRoasted Pork

January 27, 2011 - 10:30 pm

I tend to do all of my cooking for the week on Sundays. It varies from week to week depending on what sounds good - it might be a stew one week, a salad the next, and a roast the week after that. Most weeks I use chicken or turkey but I have been a bit bored with the usual so I decided to make pork. I didn't really have anything in mind when searching for the recipe, I just knew that I wanted to cook it in the crock pot. My favorite source for crock pot recipes is Crockpot365, so, with that in mind I went to the site and found this recipe. I have to admit that by the end of the week I was really sick of it. But the first few days, it was great.

Antarctic Beer

January 2, 2011 - 10:46 am

In early December, TechCrunch wrote about Gumball Capital, an organization empowering students to help end poverty using 27 gumballs, $27, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Travis Kiefer, the founder, has been running a series of marathons to raise money for his organization, and this particular effort was intended to raise $27 from donors in exchange for documenting something he did in Antarctica while there for the marathon. My request was for a mug of delicious Antarctic beer. Click Read More to see it!

Southwestern Beef Stew with Stout and Quinoa

November 20, 2010 - 5:44 pm

What was meant to be a stew turned into more of a soup. We were starving and didn't want to let some of the liquid evaporate so we ate it as it was prepared. I liked the flavor of the soup; the corn especially provided a nice contrast from the smoky chipotle flavor. If I were to make it again, the meat definitely needed to be tenderized and cooked more slowly. Adapted from Know Whey
